Want to know the best way to eliminate fear?

Ever had a week that seemed to get away from you? That’s mine and it’s only Monday when I’m writing this. Like everyone this time of year, I’ve had lots of extra events to get to over the weekend and I’m in the middle of a kitchen remodel that includes painting my own cabinets. I’m liking how everything is turning out and enjoying the process. It’s been several years since I’ve painted anything, but find it relaxing and creative.

So, forgive me, but I’m recycling a past newsletter from 2019 that I hope you find useful today.

Have you ever wanted to change something about your life and used positive affirmations to do it?

Positive affirmations are a wonderful tool, but I’ve never once been able to make a permanent change in my life using positive affirmations alone.

What works for me?

Action. I view my fear, adversity, discomfort, pain, anxiety, or whatever I’m going through as transformers, because they create action. I think of these catalysts as my positive negatives for without them I wouldn’t be who I am today.

For example, I used to fear heights. I got dizzy and nauseous whenever I climbed on a chair to change a light-bulb. All the positive affirmations in the world wouldn’t have transformed my thoughts or feelings about this fear.

So, I became a painter, and it was horrible at first. I had to climb ladders, and scaffolding, and walk planks over stairwells. Every time I climbed higher, I got the shakes and felt dizzy, but I didn’t let it stop me.

So, I became a painter, and it was horrible at first. I had to climb ladders, and scaffolding, and walk planks over stairwells. Every time I climbed higher, I got the shakes and felt dizzy, but I didn’t let it stop me.

I dove into the fear and transformed it into the true awareness that I was safe. I did this by using deep breathing meditations and by forcing myself to take action.

And I didn’t do it all at once. I started with a six foot ladder, getting used to the height. This took a month of clutching the ladder for dear life while trying to paint. But every day it got a bit better. When I was comfortable, I forced myself onto the nine foot ladder, then scaffolding, all the while climbing higher and higher until one day I was three stories high and felt perfectly at ease.

Nothing works better than action to eliminate fear and gain confidence.
