How to rewire the brain for positivity

 
 

“How quickly we can forget our good fortune, and how effortless it is to commit the bad to memory. No amount of berating, bargaining, or affirmations seem to change what appears a counterproductive behavior. 

Would it help to know humans are wired this way? The everyday survival of prehistoric ancestors depended on their ability to watch for bad news and fast track it to memory.

“But is this how you want to live? Stuck in the Stone Age? You have a choice. It’s absolutely possible to train your brain to look for enough safety, satisfaction, connection, fullness, contentment, appreciation, and love.

“Begin by consciously looking for little opportunities to experience something good. Experiences are made of information. The brain is like a miraculous computer that sifts through the information and stores it. The nervous system assigns meaning to the information based on your feelings.

“To rewire your brain while you’re experiencing something good, take a deep breath to slow things down. In that moment become super aware of what you’re feeling and consciously stay with that good experience an extra moment. Feel the good experience within your body. Where do you feel it? How do you sense it? Focus on what is rewarding about it.

“By paying attention to the feelings you enjoy a bit longer, you develop new information pathways in the brain. This is how you help the mind/body work for you to break old patterns to create a life you appreciate.

“Try this exercise throughout the week. Pay attention to how you feel when you’re experiencing something good. Feel it in your body for as long as you can. Journal your experience.”
