The quickest method out of victimhood

A lot of people believe their life will improve if someone else changes, like their significant other, a child, a friend, a parent, a boss, a neighbor, or a co-worker. If only this other person would change, they could be happy.

They spend hours, maybe days thinking these thoughts, spinning detailed scenarios, fantasies really. They let their minds go totally unedited, and their mood plummets. They tell themselves if only something or someone else was different, they could have a good life.

If you’ve determined that your happiness hinges on what someone else thinks, feels, believes, or does, then you, my friend, have stepped into the role of victim. You’ve given away all your power to someone else.

Here’s the truth: you can only live one life—yours. Ultimately, you can only think, feel, and decide for you.

The quickest way out of victimhood is to end the story you tell yourself. If you’re sad, don’t make up a story about it. Just acknowledge you’re sad. Say something like: Sadness is present. That’s enough. No story. No one to blame. No victim.
From this point, you can move into conscious creation by determining what you want to think next. This is why I encourage a bucket list. This is a list of things you’d love to think about and create for yourself.

If you’re not quite ready to move from sad to the bucket list, then take a committed action step like drinking a glass of water. After you admit that sadness is present, then say to yourself: I am pouring a glass of water. Immediately take the action by actually pouring yourself a glass of water. Then say to yourself: Now, I’m going to drink the water. Then take the action—drink the water. Next say to yourself: Now, I’m going to put the glass down. Then take the action by putting the glass down.

All of these steps, though simple, are completed through conscious mindful action. You are now in control of what you think. If you’re in control of what you think, you are no longer a victim of a deluded mind full of stories.
