Do you drive focused on the rearview mirror?

When you’re driving do you spend more time looking through your rearview mirror or your windshield?

Hopefully you said windshield. 😊

Why do you spend more time looking through your windshield than your rearview mirror?

Because it’s more important and safer to focus on what’s directly in front of you than where you’ve been, right?

I imagine that’s why the windshield is a gazillion times bigger than the rearview mirror. You only need to look behind occasionally, but your main attention needs to be forward on where you’re going.

That doesn’t mean you can’t drive the entire time with your eyes in the rearview mirror, but it won’t take long before you’ll end up in a ditch or worse. And odds are you won’t arrive anywhere near your desired destination.

If you’re living your life focused on your past, it’s similar to primarily using the rearview mirror when you drive. Obsessively reliving either your glory days or painful memories won’t help you move forward in life.

Why?

Because looking backwards, while helpful occasionally, is an extremely limited view and like driving, the odds are you’ll never experience life’s magical largeness. For that to occur, you must imagine your best life using your highest focused thoughts, and take care of whatever shows up in front of you right away.

Isn’t that how you drive? By looking forward through the largest view possible and taking care of whatever shows up right away? And don’t you have some sort of idea about where you want to go and how to get there? Don’t you decide how fast or slow you want to go? Aren’t you the one who chooses the music and what songs you sing to? And who decides who rides with you?

You do.

The rearview mirror is a tiny reflective surface affording a minuscule view of where you’ve been. It’s not even a real window, only a reflection much like your past.

It’s a big world full of endless possibilities—a good thing for a limitless creative being like you. Drive your life at least as consciously as you drive your vehicle and your destination is assured.
