Are your emotions making your pet sick?

 
 

A few years ago, I met an interesting woman who was a former pediatric registered nurse turned veterinary assistant. It was her job to visit with the animal client and calm them down.

She always waited for the animal to come to her. Then she’d hold their face in her hands, look them in the eyes and ask what’s wrong. She found that the animal would always give her some kind of sign or clue by looking to the person they were holding emotional space for. Then she’d say to the animal, we are going to help all of you and the animal would relax. At that point, the person would usually break down.

Our domestic animals are very much tied into our emotions and doing their best to help us with whatever we’re going through. Whether it’s an illness, a loss, grief, anger, anxiety, aches and pains—doesn’t matter. They are not only there for us, they often time take on the emotion or pain for us. If you have a frozen shoulder, I bet your animal does too. If you’re anxious, I bet your animal is too. When you’re sad, your animal will be quiet and comforting.

They’ll take on human emotions to the detriment of their own health. That’s why it’s so important for you to have good communication with your precious pet. If you’re having a bad day at work, make sure you explain that foul mood you came home with to your animal. Let them know it was a bad day, but tomorrow will be better and they don’t need to hold the emotion for you.

If you’re feeling sad, tell them you appreciate their cuddles but they don’t need to harbor sadness in their body. They can let it pass right through them. If you have a nervous pet, make certain you let them know before you leave where you’re going and when you’ll be back home. Assure them that you are coming back.

Don’t ever let your animal hold the emotional bag for you. Help them stay healthy by being responsible for your emotions and making sure you communicate this well to your animal.
