What can help the fight or flight trigger?

 
 

I teach breathwork. Or rather, I demonstrate how to breathe the technique, then become the vigilant witness to your transformation. I have the best job in the world, because I know your body knows what it needs in order to let go of whatever energy markers it’s holding for you. I get to witness that miraculous, beautiful, sacred release and it never gets old.

One of the ways that helps your body is breathing. Real breathing. Not the shallow stuff most of us do. Deep, real inhales and exhales calm your nervous system and pulls you out of fight/flight/freeze. When the nervous system is calm, your whole body purrs with pleasurable relief—like petting a cat the right way instead of backwards.

While I was meditating prior to last week’s powerful breathwork class, this came through for sharing:

Your breath is not a practice.

It is a prayer.

A connection to the Life that holds you.

Let what no longer breathes, fall away—

So, what still lives can inhale.

We all have moments where we feel like the life is being sucked right out of us. Our energy wanes. Exhaustion or anger rises. Here’s a wonderful way to help soothe your taxed nervous system through your breath as came to me in meditation:

  1. Take 3 deep breaths

  2. Focus on your breath

  3. In and out

  4. Sense the gift of your breath; sense it enter and feed every cell of your body.

  5. With each breath you sink into the deepest level of your being.

  6. Relaxing, relaxing.

  7. Allow your breath to move into any part of your body that feels discomfort, tightness, distraction.

  8. Allow yourself to simply exhale it away.

  9. Sense the solidness of your body wherever you are—sitting, standing, lying. Feel the solidness of it. So supported.

  10. Allow yourself to sense the gravity of the earth—your beautiful mother as she holds you, supporting your sacred journey through your breath.

  11. What you are doing right here, right now is for you. Allow the breath to move through your body and release what is not helpful.

  12. Inhale energy, confidence, bravery, love. Exhale what’s ready to go.

Your body knows.
