How can your 5 senses keep you grounded?

Anand Mehrotra, owner of Sattra Yoga in India shares this wisdom: “Existence moves through you—through all your senses. You who shape it. You who decide. Just waves until your ears hear. Just a rose until your eyes see red. We have the choice for how we see life.”

To me, this is a beautifully profound teaching that points to ultimate liberation of a mind locked in human (often ancestral) conditioning. It’s tough to move forward if our view of life is focused on the past. Like driving a car using only the review mirror.

Since Anand mentioned the body senses, I thought I’d share a simple, yet effective technique to let go of the old mind stories in favor of staying focused on what’s right in front of you.

When you catch your mind spinning and can’t seem to make it stop, try using this sensory method in the moment and right where you are:

  1. Name 5 things you can see.

  2. Name 4 things you can touch.

  3. Name 3 things you can hear.

  4. Name 2 things you can smell.

  5. Name 1 thing you can taste.

This grounding technique brings you out of your mind thoughts and into your body. It stops the unedited and usually unconscious story and puts you into your present reality. From this grounded safe place, let yourself go deeper into appreciation for the way your body works and your ability to see things from a more expanded perspective. Allow yourself to view your life from the windshield of your reality where your choices are all in front of you without dragging forward your past.
